First, toss out the light gear and bring in the big stuff. Bull reds are the big dogs of the inshore fishing scene, and they’re not going to go down without a fight. You’ll need heavy tackle and equipment if you want any chance of landing one of these fish.

Choose a medium to medium heavy action rod. These rods are built to handle the big fish and the heavy tackle you’ll be using. Next, select a quality saltwater spinning reel, and make sure it’s loaded with 30-50 lb test braided line. 4000-5000 series reels are a good option. Check out the drag system on the reel because you’ll need it to manage the fight to avoid line breakage.

Next, start thinking about the best baits and lures for your trip. Redfish feed on a variety of sea life but some of their favorite meals include shrimp, crabs, and small fish. Live bait is always a good option, but if you’re using lures, try soft plastics or topwater baits. Stock up on your go-to artificials and any necessary terminal tackle so you’ll be ready when the big day arrives.

If you’re bringing your own boat, make sure it’s in good working order and that you have all the necessary safety gear. Run through a pre-trip checklist to ensure you haven’t forgotten anything essential.
